- Sub-National AMCs: 49 (14%) AMCs cover between 30 and 49 states, offering substantial national reach without full geographic coverage.
- Regional AMCs: 52 (15%) are active in 10 to 29 states – this group includes regional leaders with a strong presence in targeted markets.
- Local AMCs: 215 (63%) AMCs are operating in fewer than 10 states – these firms often specialize in local market expertise and lender relationships. Some 112 (33%) Appraisal Management Companies are only licensed in a single State.

There has been increasing acquisition activity in the valuation industry in recent years, typically backed by private equity firms or larger publicly traded organizations. Recent notable acquisitions include Nationwide Appraisal Network (NAN) by Stewart and Allstate Appraisal by Class Valuations.
Other AMC acquisitions are less publicized, and the AMC continues to operate as a standalone entity in a larger group of companies.

The Appraisal Subcommittee (ASC) oversees the real estate appraisal regulatory framework for federally related transactions. The ASC is a subcommittee of the Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council (FFIEC).
The ASC provides the AMC Registry to search for Appraisal Management Companies based on name, state license and license number. These AMCs meet the Federal definition of an appraisal management company and are eligible to perform appraisal services in connection with Federally Related Transactions.
